Malaysia to name winners at the end of Julydate: July 24, 2002 The winners of Malaysia's 3G mobile phone licences will be named on July 31, the Communications and Multimedia Commission (CMC) said yesterday. “After all the hype about 3G, the commission is ready to make a decision,” the CMC said in a statement, adding that commission chairman Tan Sri Nuraizah Abdul Hamid would make the announcement at a news conference. Four of the country’s five telecom firms – Telekom Malaysia Bhd, Maxis Communications Bhd, Time dotCom Bhd and Technology Resources Industries Bhd (TRI) – have bid for three 3G licences. The fifth and last bid was sent in by relatively unknown E-Touch Sdn Bhd, which is said to be linked to a powerful family business group in Sarawak. Last week, Malaysian sources have suggested that the telecoms regulator, MCMC, may not award all three of the licenses it is offering to firms. A spokesman from one of the operators commented: "The evaluation process has more or less been completed and it's now with the ministry for a final decision. The industry is shivering a bit because we heard they are going to be very strict. It seems they might issue only two licences because the applicants did not measure up in terms of track record." Four of the country's five telecoms firms - Telekom Malaysia, Maxis, Time dotCom and TRI - all placed bids. The fifth bid was placed by E-Touch.
