DoCoMo to push 3G into Asiadate: July 24, 2002 DoCoMo President Keiji Tachikawa has confirmed that the company behind FOMA is still holding discussions to expand its presence and 3G expertise into Asia. Tachikawa has said that the firm believes KT Freetel and SingTel are high on its list of potential tie-up candidates. In addition to South Korea and Singapore, DoCoMo is also targeting to break into Hong Kong and Taiwan. After the huge valuation losses the Japanese firm reported recently on overseas investments, the firm is still considering a variety of options to expand its global standing, ranging from simple co-operative relationships to a complete takeover. The DoCoMo president said: "We wouldn't mind partnering with KT Freetel. We talk with them occasionally." But he confirmed that KT's reluctance to launch W-CDMA anytime soon in Korea has been a sticking point in pursuing alliances in that market. Both KT and SK are offering cdma2000 1xEV-DO with good data speeds. Tachikawa said: "I have said that these two companies are candidates because they use W-CDMA. But they just haven't revealed any detailed plans on 3G." However, SK Telecom refused DoCoMo's advances last year. DoCoMo has also said it will start to offer PDA style handsets for the first time on 16th July for its FOMA service. The handset, manufactured by Sharp, comes with a built-in keyboard and separate cigar-shaped wireless terminal to make and receive calls.
