DoCoMo expects to meet targetdate: July 26, 2002 NTT DoCoMo said on Friday it stood by its original target to win 1.38 million subscribers in Japan for its W-CDMA FOMA 3G service by next March despite a slow start. DoCoMo became the world's first 3G operator last October, offering video conferencing and fast data transmission, but it had gained only 114,500 subscribers by the end of June, raising concerns over whether the original target was achievable. Keiji Tachikawa, President of DoCoMo said, "We plan to expand our network steadily and this will cover 69 percent of the population by area by the end of July and 90 percent by the end of the businees year (on March 31)." And added, "So, we expect bigger sales in the latter half of the year." DoCoMo has so far been struggling to attract 3G users because of poor battery life, more expensive handsets and limited coverage area. Tachikawa said new 3G handsets set to be released early in the autumn are expected to stir fresh demand for 3G services.
