German W-LANdate: July 28, 2002 W-LAN is getting a boost in Germany. T-Mobile DE has revealed plans to offer the first W-LAN service, Hot Spots, by the end of this year. RegTP said earlier in the week that it did not believe W-LANs offered a threat to 3G. Instead RegTP said that the two systems will supplement each other effectively "for the benefit of all market players." The regulator has conducted an analysis into the technical, economic and regulatory effects of W-LAN on 3G.As a result it has decided to offer more frequencies in the 5GHz band in addition to those in the 2.4GHz band. It expects this to also boost UMTS services. "Using W-LAN frequencies for public applications too will therefore be in the interest of UMTS and will more likely lead to the commercial success of UMTS than if public W-LANs were prohibited," said RegTP president Matthias Kurth.
