India looks to shape the futuredate: July 29, 2002 India may not have launched 3G yet, or even allocated licenses, but that hasn't stopped it from thinking even further down the line. A new group has been established by India's Ministry of Information Technology to look at 4G standards development and deployment. The Implementation Mission Group was formed based on the recommendations of a study funded by the ministry and overseen by a prominent Indian computer engineer and professor. According to the study, the government should make grants over three years totalling about $80m to fund the activities and should only monitor and mentor the research activities rather than control them. Local sources believe that the new standards group has already met several times to consider the 4G plan and help shape it. The meetings are said to be a sign of progress but the government has yet to decide whether it will fund the effort. The move is one of the first times India has attempted to set technology standards for an emerging technology rather than waiting for international standards to emerge. However, Korea and Japan have both started working on 4G.
