3G for real by Ericsson

date: July 31, 2002

Fifteen real-life 3G applications, including real-time sports apps, face-to-face video calling and exciting team games, are being delivered to 40 operators by Ericsson so they can demonstrate to their customers just what the Mobile Internet is all about.

Showcasing the impressive range and versatility of the Mobile Internet, the 15 apps chosen for inclusion in initial WCDMA roll-outs will all be available to operators for demonstrations and marketing activities until July 1, 2003.

“The 3G applications delivered to the initial WCDMA systems are all really exciting,” says Ericsson’s Kevin Nicholl. “They are interactive, have rich content, great graphics and all of them use bandwidths provided by WCDMA.”

Something for everyone

The portfolio, called the Initial portfolio of WCDMA applications, showcases just how broad the range of WCDMA and Mobile Internet applications is.

“The portfolio shows that the Mobile Internet really does offer something to all of us,” says Nicholl. “Whether we’re at work, rest or play. The applications deliver useful, innovative services to virtually every segment of the market: home and leisure users and business and enterprise users too.”

An example of a useful business app for the enterprise market is a mobile workforce management application. It offers business users easy dispatching, including work orders, scheduling and reporting in real time.

On the leisure side there is The Hive, a new application aimed at sports and entertainment enthusiasts. The Hive allows users to access a variety of informative and entertaining services based around specific sporting events over a 3G terminal or a PDA. The services can be live, can show video highlights and replays, deliver real-time event statistics and information or even allow users to buy food and merchandize.

The portfolio also includes a Multimedia Messaging Service that can be used over initial WCDMA systems. The application, MMS Composer, includes all the functionality needed to create, send and receive personal MMSs.

About 40 operators will receive the initial WCDMA system from Ericsson, allowing them to build competence to prepare for the commercial launch of their 3G systems.

The first applications have already been delivered and the rest will be delivered during the third quarter. The portfolio consists of approximately 15-20 applications from Ericsson and third-party application developers. All of them have been evaluated from a market and a technical perspective.

Most applications can be classified as entertainment, information, communication or mobile commerce services and should be available for commercial roll-out for interested operators.

Ericsson will also use the portfolio for demonstrations at industry events.
