Adult services booming on 2G phones

July 2, 2003 - source: BWCS

Mobile porn services do not need to wait for 3G in the UK, according to the unfortunately named Bango.net. The Cambridge-based application developer is working with Netcollex, the web-wing of tabloid newspaper The Daily Sport, to enable premium services to be sent over second generation mobile networks. Bango argues that the growing number of colour-screen mobile handsets in the UK has already greatly enhanced “adult entertainment” service revenues.

Bango, which has had relationships with mobile operators in more than 40 countries throughout the world, enables Netcollex to charge for Sport content (“adult” images) via its premium rate text services. Due to the fact that mobile operators do not wish to flaunt their involvement with such services, they prefer a hands-off position; it has been left to the Daily Sport to market these premium services.

Fortunately the newspaper’s readership appears to provide fertile ground for this type of service. Famous for headlines such as “Double-Decker Bus Found on the Moon” and “I Was Attacked By Alien Pizza”, the Sport is not known for its political and economic analysis. In fact the, Daily and Sunday versions of the ‘paper are bought by 600,000 readers a week, many, if not all, of whom appear keen to get their hands on images of models – with or without clothes.

Rob Johnson, CEO at Netcollex, reports that his company now has thousands of users each week spending between £1.50 and £5 on colour pictures and videos every visit. He also believes that the services are booming, thanks to the launch of Vodafone Live! last October, which has, he argues, prompted more users to purchase colour screen mobiles such as the Sharp GX-10. Vodafone executives will no doubt be delighted to hear it.
