China ready for TD-SCDMA
July 3, 2003
Wei Leping, chief engineer of China Telecom Group, told media that the
monopolization of fixed line network has been broken. China has 200 million
to 300 million potential mobile customers. With the mature and commercialization
of 3G mobile communication technologies, both manufacturers and operators
will embrace a good opportunity for growth.
Wei pointed out that China's home-grown TD-SCDMA has benefits in both
spectrum efficiency and flexibility, and can be bounded with FDD.
"In order to push the development of TD-SCDMA, governments can demand
operators to develop 3G network and business by bounding FDD with TD-SCDMA,"
Wei suggested.
But he added that market has the final say on which system can grow best.
China Mobile and China Unicom, two large wireless carriers in China,
chose WCDMA and CDMA2000 respectively as their future 3G directions.
According to the Ministry of Information Industry's (MII) target, it
will develop four telecom carriers running all services. China Telecom
and China Netcom will be the next two operators to obtain mobile license.
The industry all agrees that the MII will admit two carriers' legal status
to operate mobile communication network by issuing them 3G licenses.
