mmo2 will not launch WCDMA in Germany in 2003

The head of mmo2's mobilephone operation Rudolf Groeger, said O2 Germany would not see a full commercial launch in 2003 of the new WCDMA 3G mobile phone services which operators hope will boost earnings as users send pictures and videos data over their mobile phones.

"We will start only with friendly user tests this year that will be rather going on behind the curtain," he said. O2 Germany had said earlier this year it aimed to launch 3G by late summer of this year.

"We don't have enough handsets at the moment," he said. "Maybe when (next March's technology fair) Cebit comes closer, the phone makers will have some more. We won't go into the mass market before we can offer three mobile phone models in two or three different price regions."
