mmO2 to delay launch until end of 2004

UK mobile operator mmO2 said by the end of next year, the company expects to have launched its WCDMA 3G high-speed mobile network but has refused to rule out even further delays.

mmO2 chief executive, Peter Erskine told a London news conference that "nothing is set in stone" on 3G launch in the UK.

He said the launch for its 3G service would fit better with availability of good handsets and suitable applications to deliver quality data services.

"The real key for when 3G will launch will be handsets," he said and added "We won't be investing hundreds of millions if the handsets and applications aren't there."

David Williams, chief technology officer at mmO2, said that no operator would offer complete 3G coverage any time soon and it will take years.
