Taiwan's APBW plans to sell cdma2000 handsets by end of month
July 5, 2003
Taiwan's Asia Pacific Broadband Wireless Communication (APBW), based
on CDMA2000 technology, will become the first operational 3G carrier in
the nation's five 3G mobile licenseees holder at the end of the month,
according to an executive of the company.
APBW is a new entrant in Taiwan’s mobile phone market and cannot rely
on any existing 2G/2.5G subscriber base to upgrade to its 3G services.
The company obtained its 3G operating license from Taiwan’s Ministry of
Communications and Transportation in April 2002. It has set a target of
signing up at least 710,000 3G accounts by the end of the year. According
to Wu Jun-de, company vice president.
According to regulations set by Taiwan’s Directorate General of Telecommunications
(DGT), 3G license winners must be in operation within six months of obtaining
their licenses. They must also have at least 250 3G base stations in operation.
APBW plans to build about 1,000 base stations throughout the island. It
is estimated that each 3G WCDMA carrier will need at least 1100 base stations
to cover Taiwan.
APBW has bought nearly one million handsets from Korea-based Samsung
Electronics, and plans to offer them at around NT$15,000 each. The company
will provide X789-model name 3G handsets from Samsung Electronics initially
to its subscribers.
"We plan to have a launching ceremony between July 20 and 26," the official
added.
Other licensees include Taiwan Cellular, Far EasTone's subsidiary Yuan-Ze
Telecom, Chunghwa Telecom Co and Taiwan PCS Network.
