3UK video mobiles now available at Superdrug
July 7, 2003
3UK said it has completed the first phase of its retail rollout and over
2,000 stores nationwide now sell 3’s video-mobiles, ranging from traditional
mobile phone outlets to ‘stores within stores’ in Superdrug shops.
Superdrug, a unit of Kruidvat Group is also owned by Hutchison Whampoa
and has provided access to prime retail locations across the UK said the
company. 3UK have opened over 60 ‘stores within stores’ so far.
However, Deutsche Bank said most of the Superdrug stores were not in
prime locations and were unlikely to draw in the high-end customers Hutchison
hoped to attract for its 3G services.
But Hutchison Whampoa group managing director Canning Fok said in responds:
"The store-within-a-store concept will be our main distribution method
for 3G. It's expensive to completely use our own stores for 3G."
Shoppers across the UK can now see video-mobiles in action when they
pop out of the office for a sandwich, or to pick up the latest cosmetics
range.
Gareth Jones, Chief Operating Officer of 3 UK said, “People love making
video calls, while our price plans offer unbeatable value on voice. Our
challenge was to make sure people across the UK would have access to this
experience. 3’s high street roll-out has been the fastest in recent retailing
history and customers can now find us in over sixty towns and cities.
I’m delighted at our progress and I would invite people to come in and
ask for a demonstration of video mobile services, our staff will be happy
to help.”
As well as rolling out its services to Superdrug stores nationwide 3
has actively trained over 3,000 staff in third party retailers on how
to sell its video mobile services.
Last week, UK's mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse said around
3,000 to 4,000 3G handsets were sold each week of the mobile phone operator
3UK.
The weekly sales have grown by around five times since the 3UK started
to introduce cheaper pricing plans to boost take-up of its 3G multimedia
service.
