Partner to roll out 3G by 2003

July 8, 2003

A London news group reported Partner Communications, GSM network operator in Israel and a unit of Hutchison Whampoa, is determine to start rolling out its 3G network at the end of 2003 and expects commercial service in 2004, quoting a company spokesman.

The company's vice president Dr. Dan Eldar told Reuters the company will choose the supplier of the 3G network within a few weeks.

Four groups are competing for the lucrative WCDMA 3G nertwork contact that could be worth around £200million., Siemens/NEC, Nokia, Ericsson and Nortel Networks.

The partnership of Siemens and NEC is looking likely to be the winner because the group supplied Europe's first 3G network in the UK for the new venture 3UK, also a unit of Hutchison Whampoa.

Nortel Networks is the least likely to be the winner. With comments such as "Chunghwa buys good products, not cheap products" from the Taiwanese Ministry of Communication spokesman, on justification for awarding a 3G contact to Nokia, despite Nortel offering the lowest bid.

Israel issued three 3G mobile network licenses in December 2001 to Cellcom Israel Pelephone Communications and Partner Communications.

Partner pay 220 million NIS ($US 52.0 million) for the 3G spectrum.
