LG wants to be a UMTS 3G player
July 9, 2003
The Korean electronics group LG Electronics said the conglomerate will
enter the 3G mobile market this year with new UMTS 3G handsets on offer
just before Christmas in Asia and the company also wants a bigger slice
of the Asian 3G handset market.
The 3G mobile phone business will be an important part of LG, said the
company spokesman to the local press and added that the Korean people
will largely become acceptance of multi-media messaging (MMS) and video
services as everyday life.
LG CEO John Koo pointed out that data services such as MMS would see
the fastest growth in the mobile business and eventually will be the killer
application in Korea.
Koreans already have a high acceptance to MMS, currently begin offered
by Korean Telecom and SK Telecom. Koo calculates that by the end of 2004,
Korea could become a measure market from around the world for mobile data
services.
LG intends to become one of the top 3 providers of 3G devices by the
end of 2005. At the moment, LG have no intention to introduce 3G handsets
outside of Asia.
3GNewsroom.com called the LG press office to ask if the company will
be supplying 3G handsets to Hutchison 3G UK, the press officer replied,
"At the moment we have no plans to supply Hutchison with 3G mobile phones
in the UK or any of its units. We have no contact with Hutchison."
