Telefonica to sell WCDMA licence

Telefonica Moviles is rumoured to be looking to sell its 3G licences in four European countries, according to Telecom.paper.

The news service asserts that the mobile operator is looking to recoup some of E6.49bn it invested in the licences by selling off its right to develop operate 3G services in Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. Telefonica has so far made no substantial effort to roll out networks in these countries, and risks simply having its licences revoked if it does not manage to meet deployment deadlines, which for Germany and Austria start kicking in at the end of 2003.

However, the terms of its licence agreements mean that Telefonica Moviles will be unable to shift its 3G obligations without formal legislative changes being implemented by the governments concerned. So far, only Italy shows signs of capitulating.
