3UK launch the new NEC e808y

3UK have start selling the e808y manufactured by Japanese firm NEC to attract more customers to its 3G mobile service.

It is the fourth handset brought out by 3 and the first since the three initial handsets went on sale at the launch of the service back in March.

The PDA style e808y is almost a duplicate of the e808 with a Qwerty keyboard design, making it great for messaging, but unlike the e808 is not a flip phone. It is somewhat compactor, but everything else is pretty much the same, 64 MB internal memory, 65,536 TFT screen colour, dual front/back camera and similar talktime and standby time.

The cost of the e808y had been set the same as the other handsets with prices starting from £49 on the VideoTalk 500 monthly package while 3UK would offer the handset for free on VideoTalk 750 or over. Customers opting for the 3toGo tariff would pay £249 for the videophone.

3UK's 3G handsets were selling as much as £449 at the start of its launch in March but poor sales had led to a massive slash in price.

Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa, majority shareholder of 3UK, plans to launch its next new 3G unit in Hong Kong next month after many delays due to various reasons. Hutchison's global 3G empire has H3G units operating in Italy, Australia, Austria and Sweden.
