Hong Kong Awaits 3G Launch
July 10, 2003 - source: BWCS
The start of Hutchison 3’s launch campaign yesterday suggests that 3G
is finally about to arrive in Hong Kong. The long-awaited service is expected
to be introduced in the former colony next month, though an actual launch
date has yet to be announced. The operator is now busy signing up early
bird subscribers, offering users who register with its website by 23 July
and subscribe to the service two weeks before launch a special package
of 333 free local video call minutes.
It may sound like a good deal, though it will be a brave user who is
happy to sign their life away before further details have been revealed,
including the price of handsets and service. When asked about this by
Hong Kong daily the South China Morning Post, a Hutchison spokeswoman
said that details would be provided at service launch.
Expectations about the impact of 3G on Hong Kong’s 6.4 million mobile
users vary considerably. Cusson Leung at ING Financial Markets Investment
warned, “Hong Kong is such a small city and broadband access is widely
available. I don’t think there is a strong need for making video calls
with mobiles.” Meanwhile Leo Sin Yat-ming, Marketing Professor at the
Chinese University of Hong Kong, predicts that 30 percent of mobile phone
users will switch to 3G within six months. “Hong Kong people love to try
new things,” he said. “Mobile phones have a function here, not only as
a communication tool, it’s also a fashion. And peer group pressure is
very high.”
Hutchison will be the first of Hong Kong’s six mobile operators to launch
a 3G service in the territory. Of the other three 3G licence holders only
Hong Kong CSL has so far announced plans for service launch, scheduled
for sometime next year, while Sunday and Smartone said they had no timetable
at present.
