Polish launch deadline postpone again
July 12, 2003
Centertel, Polkomtel and PTC, all 3G license holders in Poland, will
ask regulator URTiP to postpone the deadline for 3G service launches by
one year to start-2006, according to Slawomir Skrodzki, CEO of Centertel,
a TPSA unit.
URTiP (Telecommunications and Postal Regulation Office) is a newly-created
government telecoms agency to regulate 3G services.
A one-year extension was already granted in April 2002. The companies
argue that they have heavy debt burdens and that UMTS equipment is still
not fully reliable.
Separately, Centertel is on track to make a net profit on a revenue up
25% in 2003, said Skrodzki, adding that the company had over 5 million
customers at end-June 2003.
PTC so far is the first Polish 3G license holder able to demonstrate
voice, data and video communications on a UMTS trial system installed
in Poznan by Alcatel.
Depending on how the technology progresses in other European countries.
Polish operators PTC, Polkomtel and PTK were expected to spend EUR3.1bn
to set up their networks in time for the original 2003 deadline.
