SingTel to award contract soon

July 12, 2003

A SingTel CEO official said the company will award a multimillion dollar contract to build a 3G mobile network in Singapore next month or two.

"I believe it (the award) is imminent. In fact, I know it is imminent," said Bill Hope, executive vice president for SingTel.

SingTel would like to launch a limited 3G services in late 2003 with the collaboraion of Japan's NTT DoCoMo. The two compaines signed a pact in April to work on 3G service and product development. But given the massive killer-virus SARS effects in the small country, the limited service looks likely not be launch until early 2004.

SingTel estimated the cost of building a 3G network in Singapore at about US$200 million over three years.

However telecom analysts think the cost would likely to be cheaper at aroud the $150 million mark given falling telecom infrastructure costs and poor economic lookout in the Far East.

Nokia, Ericsson, Siemens/NEC and Itochu are the bidders for the US$200 million contract.
