Far EasTone to takeover DoCoMo's asset access in Taiwan
July 14, 2003
NTT DoCoMo said it is still considering its strategy regarding a 3G mobile
communications service for Taiwan.
DoCoMo already offers its "i-mode" mobile Internet service via KG Telecommunications,
Taiwan's fourth-largest mobile phone service provider. DoCoMo is the second-largest
shareholder in KG Telecommunications with a 21.4% stake.
But KG Telecommunications doesn't have a 3G license as it withdrew from
Taiwan's 3G license auction in December 2001. As DoCoMo originally invested
in KG Telecommunications to take its "i-mode" and 3G wireless services
to Taiwan, KG's lack of such a license marks a gap in DoCoMo's international
strategy there.
That gap could be filled if Taiwan's Far EasTone Telecommunications,
a mobile phone service provider that does hold a 3G license, acquires
KG Telecommunications as media reports have suggested. Such a move would
likely be welcomed by NTT DoCoMo, industry observers said.
While DoCoMo reiterated it is aware of a possible acquisition of KG by
Far EasTone, it declined to comment on an Economic Daily News report Friday
that DoCoMo had given its approval Thursday for such an acquisition.
