Nokia 6620 EDGE and GPRS data connectivity |
Peoples Telephone is formed by China Resources, Telepaging, Overseas Telecom, KPN Telecom and Mobile System International.
Ericcson will provide the infrastructure for the service, while the first EDGE handset will be from Nokia.
"We will carry out field trials in September and commercially launch EDGE by year-end," Henshaw said.
The total investment for the year 2003 is estimated to be US$30 Million.
One of Peoples' main rival, Hutchison 3G HK will be the first operator to launch 3G service in the city in August using the expensive WCDMA 3G standard.
If Peoples succeeded in launching commercial EDGE 3G service by the end of the year, it would be "a big snap in the face for Hutchison", a source told 3GNewsroom.com, because Peoples can offer 3G type services at "US$90 million cheaper", the source added.
An ITU-approved 3G standard, EDGE is an enhanced version of GPRS that boosts existing GSM spectrum capacity and data to support 3G-type services such as video streaming, web browsing and email with attachment at maximum data rates of 384 kbps.
Peoples is one of two mobile phone operators in Hong Kong, along with New World Mobility without a WCDMA 3G licence.
