July 15, 2003
Qualcomm congratulates Saigon Postel on the successful commercial launch
of its CDMA2000 1X network, S-Fone, which commenced service last week.
The new S-Fone network covers 12 provinces and cities (Hanoi, Ho Chi
Minh, Dong Nai, Vung Tau, Binh Duong, Long An, Tien Giang, Ha Tay, Bac
Ninh, Hai Duong, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh). S-Fone is operated by Saigon
Postel, with Korean joint venture partner, SLD Telecom.
“Saigon Postel's deployment of CDMA2000 1X represents a major advancement
in Vietnamese telecommunications and positions the company as a leader
within Vietnam’s telecommunications market, enabling it to provide more
capacity for voice traffic, along with high-speed data capabilities,”
said Jeff Jacobs, president of global development for Qualcomm. “Saigon
Postel is the first operator in Vietnam able to offer advanced 3G services
and products to its customers.”
“Saigon Postel is committed to bringing the most advanced communications
services to Vietnam,” said Trinh Dinh Khuong, managing director of Saigon
Postel. “We are pleased to be able to meet the demands of Vietnam’s mobile
users and provide high-speed wireless data services and applications in
the near future. We expect to attract 100,000 subscribers by the end of
2003 by offering access to a wide array of exciting new services, including
music downloads and instant messaging.”
Saigon Postel joins more than 44 other commercial 3G operators in 23
countries worldwide. The extensive range of products and services enabled
by CDMA2000 1X has led to dynamic increases in subscription uptakes across
the world, with over 47 million 3G CDMA2000 1X reported subscribers, as
of May 31, 2003.
