Luxembourg awards fourth 3G licence

July 19, 2003

A news website, Europemedia.net reported that the Luxembourg government has received a single application on the country's fourth 3G WCDMA licence after their call for tender on May 2003.

The application was made by LuXcommunications, a joint venture of Audiolux, BGL Investment Partners and La Direction.

Luxembourg's Communications Minister approved the application and signed the licence in the presence from the company.

The company will have to pay 0.2% of their revenues with a minimum of US$189,000 per year for 15 years.

Orange, Tango and P&T Luxembourg are the three other 3G licence holders in Luxembourg.

Tango, a unit of Tele2, launched its limited 3G UMTS network on April 2003.

P&T Luxembourg has just recently placed an order with Siemens mobile to built its 3G network and expect the network to go live in mid-2004.

Orange, a unit of France Telecom, has not signed any agreements with vendors.
