T-Mobile Uses Employees as 3G Guinea Pigs

Germany’s largest mobile operator T-Mobile has started a pilot in preparation for the commercial launch of its UMTS network, scheduled for the third quarter this year. The trial is being carried out using up to 1000 T-Mobile employees and other ‘internal clients’, and is to be extended to selected business customers shortly.

Initially the pilot will cover 23 major German cities, including Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt. A company spokesman said, “Once a sufficient number of UMTS mobile handsets are available and the networks are functioning stably, the services will be launched in the autumn.” At that point, network coverage is to extend to about 200 municipalities. Rivals Vodafone D2 and O2 Germany are also getting ready for 3G kick-off later this year, while KPN’s E-Plus has postponed its full commercial launch until 2004.
