Huawei Dials Long-Distance IP Video Call Based on 3GPP R4 of WCDMA
July 22, 2003
Huawei Technologies, a supplier of telecom infrastructure and telecom
service, announced that the company has made the IP video call between
Beijing and Shenzhen with its WCDMA gears.
Huawei made the IP video call in its own WCDMA pilot networks located
in Shenzhen and Beijing, using commercial WCDMA handsets and its R4 network
equipment. This is the first R4-based IP video call on WCDMA ever made
in China.
3GPP R4 is the first step of WCDMA towards an all-IP multimedia era.
It enables the mobile video telephony service, which is one of the most
popular applications in 3G, to be carried on the IP network. Leveraging
soft-switch architecture, Huawei's WCDMA core network can substantially
increase the efficiency of the whole network and reduce OPEX by a large
margin. It can smoothly evolve to R5 and even R6, thus protecting the
investment of operators.
"For the whole industry their task is they should act to bring people
more convenient and efficient approaches of communications. More colorful
while still affordable by the majority," said Mr. Yu Chengdong, Vice President
in charge of research and development at Huawei. "Keeping this in mind,
Huawei is making great efforts to realize the mostadvanced technology
of 3G for our customers with the most cost-effective solutions."
