Early 3G launch for AT&T Wireless

July 16, 2004

US mobile operator AT&T Wireless is on target to launch 3G services this year and is rumoured to be introduced in some cities as early as next week.

Motorola A845

Sources told Reuters that AT&T Wireless will launch 3G in four cities including San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix and Detroit. The company will be offering unlimited data usage at a flat rate of about $25 a month to consumers and $80 a month to corporate customers.

AT&T Wireless is expected to offer the Motorola A845 handset and a PC data card while Nokia is also expected to be supplying 3G handsets to the operator.

AT&T Wireless is the US's third largest operator but once the US$41 billion acquisition by Cingular Wireless is completed in October, it will form the country's largest mobile operator.

Rivals Verizon is already offering high-speed mobile data services in two markets with its CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network supporting speeds between 300kbps to 500kbps. AT&T Wireless's 3G network, based on the WCDMA standard, is able to transmit during tests speeds of 200kbps to 300kbps.
