LG Telecom Turns down Qualcomm's EV-DV chip

July 20, 2004 - source: Telecoms Korea

LG Telecom decided not to use Qualcomm chip in its test service of EV-DV, a third generation IMT-2000 service based on the CDMA 2000 standard.

A report from inews24, an online IT news provider quoted an official from LG Telecom saying, "LG Electronics is preparing system and handsets adopting chips manufactured by a foreign maker other than Qualcomm. The test service scheduled for starting at the end of this year is proceeded with on time."

The planned EV-DV service is based on the revision C version and will be available in Seoul and metropolitan area at the beginning stage.

EV-DV provides higher data transmission rates than CDMA 2000 1x and the revision D was recently confirmed as the standard version. The revision C supports 3.1 Mbps on the forward link and 307 Kbps on the reverse link and the reverse rate is upgraded to 1.8Mbps in the revision D.

Qualcomm which has dominated the Korean CDMA chip market is expected to release a chipset 6700 sample of the revision D standard.

LG Telecom explains that it was not in the status to wait for Qualcomm's new chip and let LG Electronics entered a contract with another chipmaker. However, the company leaves the door open to the US chip maker, saying that Qualcomm chipset is possibly adopted in the future.
