Camera phone vs. Digital camera, Upcoming war over 4 Megapixel market

July 23, 2004 - source: Telecoms Korea

With the release of 3-megapixel camera phones, high resolution camera phones are likely to make inroads into stand-alone digital camera market.

LG Economic Weekly of 21th July introduced a report, "Camera phone and digital camera, enemy or friend?" written by Cho Jun-Il at LG Economic Research Institute.

According to Mr. Cho, 4- or 5-megapixel cameras will dominate the digital camera market in the future. He also added when camera phones reach 4-megapixel level, they can replace stand-alone cameras in full swing with advanced mobility and multifunction.

The report divided the digital camera market in 2008 into 3 segments; high resolution cameras of 6-megapixel and over will account for 30%, 4-to 5-megapixel 50% and 3-megapixel and less 20%. While the low-end 3-megapixel camera market will be the first to be conquered by camera phones, 4- to 5-megapixel camera phones will only share the market and can not fully replace stand-alone rivals, Mr. Cho predicted.

LG Economic Institute also forecasted that camera phones and digital cameras will share only mid-range market after 2010 when stand-alone cameras takes hold in high-end market and low-end one is dominated by camera phones.

Meanwhile, the camera phone market will sustain robust growth and reach 230 million units or 40% of the total handset market in 2006, the Institute foresees.
