E-Plus to launch 3G in mid-August
July 27, 2004
German mobile operator E-Plus said it will introduce handsets for its 3G network in the middle of next month.
Starting August 16, E-Plus will be selling the SonyEricsson Z1010 handset for around 299.9 euros to 399.9 euros depending on the monthly tariff. The firm is also offering the leaf shaped Nokia 7600 for 199.9 euros to 299.9 euros.
While some 3G operators are using video calling as the marketing focus, E-Plus will try to attract customers with its video download service. The 7600's lack of video calling function and the relatively small number of 3G mobile users using video calling are reasons why the firm will focus on video downloads.
Vodafone was the first operator in May to offer 3G handsets in Germany and was quickly followed by T-Mobile. Vodafone is using 3G handsets from Samsung and SonyEricsson while T-Mobile is offering the Nokia 7600.
O2 remains the only other 3G operator after two of the six license winners abandoned deployment of their 3G networks.
