July 17, 2005
Far Eastone announced Wednesday that it has launched 3G services in Taiwan. The firm, which currently has 6.19 million mobile phone subscribers, aims to attract around 50,000 subscribers to the new service by the end of the year said company president and chief operations officer Jan Nilsson.
"Our clients now can make video calls to 21 countries via 37 networks," Nilsson said.
Far Eastone's 3G network uses WCDMA technology and subscribers can access 3G services offered by NTT DoCoMo in Japan.
Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan's largest operator with eight million subscribers, will launch its 3G service on 26 July. It plans to offer 3G fee rates similar to that of 2G and 2.5G rates, as well as discount prices for its first two 3G handset models, the Sony Ericsson K600I and Motorola V975. A further 8 handsets will be unveiled at the launch.
