Poor video signal for mobile companies
July 21, 2005 - source: BWCS
Despite the claims of mobile operators, it appears that few consumers actually want to receive video on their mobile phones. That is the shock findings of a new survey by US research firm In-Stat. According to the company, as few as one in eight current mobile customers is actually interested in paying for mobile video services.
The survey also found that 67% of those surveyed are currently unable to receive video on their handsets. In a further dagger to the heart of mobile operator's new service ambitions, In-Stat reported that its survey seems to show that customers who describe themselves as "satisfied" i.e. with no desire to switch operators, are in fact the least likely to be interested in video.
The only silver lining in the rather depressing cloud of bad news for operators is that the research company still believes that there will be well over one million mobile video subscribers worldwide by the end of this year. Overall the company believes that there will be at least 30 million such customers by 2010.
