Tax exemption for 3G operators in Taiwan
July 24, 2005
The Taiwanese Cabinet has approved a proposal to waive sales tax on the country's 3G mobile service providers for a five-year period, reported Dow Jones Newswire. The proposal will be sent to the Legislative Yuan in two weeks' time.
It is hoped the waiving of tax would encourage the development of 3G on the island. The proposal allows 3G operators to decide within two years of launching their services when to start receiving the tax benefits.
So far only two out of five license holders have launched 3G services. Asia Pacific Telecom Group has been providing 3G service since July 2003 while Far EasTone only recently launched its 3G service in the middle of July.
Chunghwa Telecom said it will launch the new service on 26 July. Taiwan Mobile is looking to launch commercial service in August and VIBO Telecom will offer services in the fourth quarter.
