BenQ launches 3G S80 in Taiwan

July 24, 2005

BenQ officially launched its first self-developed 3G mobile handset, the S80, for the Taiwan market.

Company chairman KY Lee said 3G handsets would be shipped to Taiwanese operators Chunghwa Telecom and Taiwan Mobile.

The S80 supports GSM/GPRS and WCDMA standards and features a built-in 1.3-megapixel camera. Chunghwa will be offering the handset for NT$12,990 (£236) when customers subscribe to the 3G service, which will be launched 26 July.

Lee also added that the company plans to roll out at least five more 3G handsets before the end of next year.

During the launch of the S80, Benq also announced that about 10,000 3G phones are being delivered to telecom operators in Europe every month.

"We are delivering some 10,000 (3G handsets) ... to several European operators," said business group director Chen Ching-lung.

The company is currently shipping the S80 to mmO2 of UK and TIM of Italy under an ODM deal.
