Telefonica Prepares to March Into Slovakia

July 18, 2006 - source: BWCS

Spanish operator Telefonica, showing no sign of a slowing appetite for foreign expansion, has announced plans to bid for new mobile phone licence in Slovakia. According to reports in the Spanish business daily Expansion, the Slovak authorities have received three bids for the new licence, which will allow the winner to build both GSM and UMTS networks.

Also in the running for the new franchise is Czech Radiokomunikace, which is bidding in conjunction with local Slovak financial group Penta. Austria Mobilkom has also launched a bid. According to the Slovak Telecoms office, conditions for the licence include a reduction in mobile phone call prices and increased competition in the mobile sector.

The winning bidder will face competition from the two mobile established mobile operators: Orange Slovakia and T-Mobile Slovakia. In January of this year, T-Mobile launched a limited 3G services in Slovakia. At that time the German controlled operator had around 2 million customers and a 44% share of the market, tailing France Telecom-backed Orange, which boasted 2.5 million subscribers and a 56% market share.
