J-Phone develops 3G handsets to see 3D imagesdate: June 7, 2001 - source: J-Phone announced today that it would develop the worlds first 3G handsets incorporating 3D graphics, underscoring its position as a pace-setter for innovation in Japanese mobile Internet sector. The announcement follows the successful application of 3D graphics technology developed jointly by Bandai and 3D software developer HI, to a J-Phone prototype cdma2000 handset. J-Phone expects to introduce new 3G handsets incorporating the 3D technology around next year, 2002. By enabling compelling graphics content, including moving three-dimensional images, the technology will greatly enhance J-Phone's interactive mobile offering, delivered through its J-Sky mobile Internet portal. Managing Director of Service Planning at J-PHONE, Mr Philip Marnick, said: This latest innovation will bolster J-Phone's competitive position in the Japanese market for the future. Japanese consumers, particularly those in the important youth segment, have consistently rewarded operators delivering high quality, innovative and lively content. Our J-Sky mobile Internet service has achieved strong growth for this reason. We expect that the launch later next year of handsets that incorporate 3D graphics will contribute to further growth in subscribers and market share. The new 3D technology - Mascot Capsule Engine/Micro3D Edition for J-PHONE - is a modification of HI Corps successful Mascot Capsule Engine that optimizes the limited resources of a cell-phone handset. New J-PHONE handsets will enable smooth display of three-dimensional images at four to 20 frames a second, itself a major innovation. Importantly however, users will also be able to enlarge or reduce objects on their handset display and obtain 360-degree views of these objects with simple keyed functions. This is expected to facilitate rapid growth of mobile commerce on J-PHONE's J-Sky platform, as customers will be able to see rear and side-angle views of objects before purchasing them. J-PHONE plans to incorporate the 3D graphics technology into its third-generation mobile platform running on cdma2000 network standard scheduled for launch in 2002.
