US Air Force asking £3.2billion for 3G banddate: June 10, 2001 - source: A recent news article printed by The Early Bird, for the US Air Force said it is asking for £3.2billion if a segment of its next generation 3G spectrum is to be released to accommodate commercial uses. The 1755-1850Mhz frequency band is needed for IMT-2000 services and is controlled by the Pentagon under authorises of the Air Force, Army and Navy. However much of the band is already in used by the military for satellite communications and command centres that a repayment of £3.2billion would be required by the Air Force to replace any equipment's using the 1755-1850MHz band. The Army and the Navy have already said they will not release the specific spectrum for public commercial uses. This may proved good news for Qualcomm since it can deliver equivalent 3G speed at lower cost with its Cdma2000 standard at 1250Mhz.
