Concerns on cancer by 3G networkdate: June 10, 2001 German companies with 3G licenses will be allowed to share network infrastructure, but not everyone is joy with the high-speed technology. Over 400 protect groups including cancer groups in Germany concerned with the risks caused by 3G electromagnetic waves have called on the government to ban the installation of any new UMTS network. Study shown UMTS electromagnetic waves submission may caused 38% more threats to health than 2G. Symptoms include physical disturbances such as sleeping disorders, lost of hairs and higher risk of cancer to children. After spending £37billion to obtain 3G licenses from the government last August, the six providers are in a hurry to recoup their investment and reduce huge amounts of debt. Hostility to the building of a UMTS network is particularly intense in rural Germany. There, opponents are pressuring local officials with petitions and lawsuits to stop UMTS providers from installing equipment on public buildings and churches. But beyond raising awareness of the issue, the opponents have had very little success so far. Just last week, an injunction brought against T-Mobile was abandoned after it became clear that the courts would reject it. This week the protest groups will take their case to the European court of justice on demanding a ban on any more poles, antennae and other UMTS equipment to be set-up in Germany.
