China will not have 3G until 2005date: June 11, 2001 According to China's domestic mobile operators at the GSM China 2001 conference, commercial 3G services will not be rolling out until 2005 in China. Operators showed hesitation towards a swift migration from 2G to 3G services when the technology has not been proven at present. Lu Xiangdong, deputy director of China Mobile said, China would not transfer to 3G very soon, the Chinese market is not really for 3G both on technically and socially. Most of the countries 80 million subscribers still use mobile phones as phone calls only, without using Internet or SMS. "For a quite long period, voice calls will be the major function of the mobile phones," Lu said and added, the company wants to learn from the experiences of those in Japan and Europe before making changes. Although hesitating for a quick transfer to 3G, China Mobile is busy upgrading their 2G CDMA which provides smoother transfer to 3G standard.
