Shosteck Group white paper identifies benefits of CDMA as a 3G migration path for TDMA operators

date: June 12, 2001 - source: CDMA Development Group

The CDMA Development Group (CDG) today announced the publication of a white paper entitled "GSM or CDMA: The Commercial and Technology Challenges for TDMA Operators." The paper compares CDMA and GSM migration paths as 3G options for TDMA/IS-136 carriers. The Shosteck Group as independent strategic consultants for the paper, and provided a balanced analysis and presentation of their findings. Go directly to the white paper please click here.

The study addresses both technical and commercial issues that TDMA operators face today in choosing a 3G technology, such as handset and infrastructure availability and cost, spectrum requirements and backward compatibility. The Shosteck Group concludes that CDMA may offer significant advantages over GSM for some TDMA operators, especially for those licensed with 800 MHz spectrum. The advantages of the cdmaOneä/CDMA2000 path over the GSM/GPRS/WCDMA path include:

- commercial availability of CDMA infrastructure equipment for the 800 MHz band;
- market presence of ten CDMA2000 handsets, with 26 more expected by the end of the year;
- implementation cost advantages due to the fact that both CDMA and TDMA are based on ANSI-41 network signaling.

"Although the Shosteck Group does not endorse one 3G migration path over another, we have found that there are several challenges for TDMA carriers to migrate to GSM and onward to WCDMA," said Dr. Herschel Shosteck, President and Chairman of The Shosteck Group.

"In our analysis we identify the possible challenges that TDMA operators may face in deploying GSM and the possible advantages that cdma2000 1X may offer. Based on these possible advantages, TDMA/IS-136 network operators may find it worthwhile to consider cdmaOne/CDMA2000 1X as a migration path," stated Jane Zweig, Chief Executive Officer of The Shosteck Group.

Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG, commented, "TDMA operators around the world, especially in Latin America, are faced with a difficult decision in choosing which 3G technology to select. The study is an excellent discussion of the options available to them and clearly identifies core issues that they need to address. The study confirms that CDMA2000, the only 3G technology commercially in use today, is a viable solution for TDMA operators."
