AirPrime and Sprint PCS Complete Live 3G cdma2000 1x Voice Calldate: June 12, 2001 - source: AirPrime and Sprint PCS, today announced the companies completed the first live CDMA2000 1x voice call for the SB3000, Springboard module. Working in cooperation with Sprint PCS from its Systems Test and Integration Center in Lenexa, Kansas, AirPrime used its 3G, 1x-ready CDMA Springboard module, the SB3000, to place both mobile-originated and mobile-terminated voice calls over the Sprint PCS network. The successful completion of the CDMA2000 1x voice call denotes yet another significant milestone for AirPrime, which announced in March that it had worked with Sprint PCS to complete field data and voice testing approvals for its Springboard module. "AirPrime's successful live voice call on Sprint PCS' CDMA2000 1x-enabled network is a significant accomplishment and an important step toward true 3G wireless communication devices," said Brian Finnerty, Senior Director of Product Realization for Sprint PCS. In addition to being a first for AirPrime, the call was also one of the first live 1x demonstrations by a 3G terminal manufacturer to use the newest QUALCOMM Incorporated 3G CDMA2000 1x MSM5105 Mobile Station Modem (MSM) integrated circuit and system software. The MSM5105 integrated circuit supports data rates of up to 153 kbps and is backward compatible with today's IS-95A/B networks. The SB3000 module incorporates 3G CDMA2000 1x chip technology enabling users to gracefully transition to higher wireless data speeds and enhanced voice capacity on their Handspring Visor without having to purchase additional hardware. "Sprint PCS is on track for 3G migration and is working closely with its infrastructure, application and device vendors, like AirPrime, in the testing, preparation and planning for 3G deployment," said Oliver Valente, Chief Technology Officer for Sprint PCS. "Hitting this milestone confirms that AirPrime shares Sprint PCS' commitment to 3G and our clear path to deployment." By mid 2002, the entire Sprint PCS all-digital nationwide network will offer 3G CDMA2000 1x services. CDMA is the fastest growing and most popular air interface in North America. Current IS-95A networks support 14.4 kbps while IS-95B networks in Asia support 64 kbps. Future deployments of CDMA2000 1xEV will support data speeds from 153 kbps to 2.4 Mbps, as well as offering significant improvements in system capacity and standby time. Analysts expect that wireless data subscribers will surpass one billion by 2005 as the world continues to migrate toward 3G technology.
