IMT-2000 study group to be set-up in Japandate: June 18, 2001 The Japanese Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications on June 18 said it is to set up a study group on the security and reliability of the 3G wireless system. The study group will work out measures for enhancing the stability of the IMT-2000 3G mobile telecommunications networks and for ensuring security of the information provided through the networks, among other measures. The ministry plans to create, on the basis of the discussions by the study group, guidelines for establishing and managing the network facilities in October 2001, when NTT DoCoMo starts its full-scale IMT-2000 service, FOMA, and KDDI launches its full-fledged IMT-2000 service using the "cdmaOne 1x" system. The ministry intends to include the guidelines in the "standards for secure and reliable info-communications," which it has been managing since 1987. The ministry, however, said it is difficult to include in the guidelines numerical targets, such as the number of servers for the backup system, because the guidelines the study group will create have no binding power.
