Plans for 4G in Japandate: June 19, 2001 A special committee of the Telecommunications Council, an advisory group to the Minister of the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications, announced a detailed plan for the 4G mobile communications system that will succeed the IMT-2000. According to the plan, the 4G fourth generation will be commercialized in 2010. The maximum data communications speed will be 100Mbps, while that for IMT-2000 is 2Mbps. For the new generation system, a universal specification for mobile communications terminals will be adopted so that users will be able to choose any mobile communications operator they like. The council will report the plan, the future outlook for the next-generation mobile communications system, to the minister on June 25. In response to the move, the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications will work on standardization of the new generation mobile communication system and submit it to the International Telecommunications Union-Radiocommunications (ITU-R) Sector an international standards organization. Specifically, the ministry is expected to submit the report to WP8F, a meeting to examine the next generation system to be held by the ITU-R starting on June 27, as a proposal from Japan.
