SingTel plans to convert GPRS users into buying 3Gdate: June 20, 2001 Lucas Chow, Chief Executive of SingTel said on Wednesday the company would plan an aggressive promotional campaign of its 2.5G (GPRS) mobile phone services in September or October to inform the public of 3G wireless services in late-2002. "A lot of GPRS handsets will be available" by September or October and a big promotional campaign will start, Chow said Chow said, SingTel has received mostly positive feedback from its GPRS users, which was launched in January and hopes to convert those users into using 3G services. He said the GPRS technology is likely to see "a lot more growth in the beginning and middle of next year." 2.5G will be "a perfect platform for mobile operators to sharpen their knives" for the forthcoming third-generation mobile phone technology, he said. Contrary to analysts' views that 3G will cater to a high-income consumer group, Chow said 3G would also be popular among other income groups. "We can't ignore the portion (for services) that's entertainment related or leisure related," Chow said. He said SingTel plans to roll out its 3G service in the middle or end of next year. "The rollout will depend on whether we have handsets available," he said, adding that new supply is being delayed amid the current downturn in the telecom sector and technology problems.
