Lucent confirms equipment will support 3G infrastructure sharing under guidelines of German regulatordate: June 20, 2001 - source: Lucent today said that its network equipment will be able to support the network infrastructure sharing guidelines recently outlined by the German regulator (RegTP) within the timeframe specified. Lucent is the provider of wireless networks that use spread spectrum technology, the underlying radio access technology for 3G UMTS. "We commend the German Telecoms Regulator, RegTP, for developing an approach that could help speed the deployment of 3G wireless systems in Europe," said John Marinho, Lucent's vice president for UMTS offer management. "Lucent Technologies Flexent OneBTS base station was designed to accommodate multiple frequency allocations that can be logically segregated through software. "We believe the intent of the guidelines to provide the added flexibility and economy through infrastructure sharing makes sense and can be effectively implemented in the equipment we already have shipped to our customers for testing." RegTP recently issued guidelines suggesting ways to mitigate the cost of 3G UMTS through infrastructure sharing, without changing the fundamental licensing rules or eliminating competition among the successful bidders. Successful bidders for the licenses could reduce the cost of network infrastructure by sharing space in common mobile base stations (called "Node B"), while maintaining separate radio filters tuned to the specific frequencies assigned to each operator.
