Nortel Networks to supply Oni Way with 3G UMTS Networkdate: June 21, 2001 - source: Nortel Networks ONI WAY has selected Nortel Networks to supply Wireless Internet infrastructure equipment and professional services for build out of its 3G UMTS network in Portugal. Nortel Networks is providing ONI WAY with a turnkey UMTS network solution, including a core packet network backbone; radio access infrastructure and transmission equipment; an advanced applications and services platform fully integrated into a single operational support system; and professional services such as network design, site acquisition and construction. Holder of the country's only 'greenfield' license to provide nationwide UMTS service, ONI WAY will use Nortel Networks equipment to provide service across southern Portugal, including the capital city of Lisbon and the Algarve. ONI WAY and Nortel Networks have already installed, tested and commissioned the first UMTS radio equipment in Lisbon. Network rollout is progressing on schedule to achieve ONI WAY's objective of being the first operator to launch UMTS services in Portugal. Nortel Networks has previously announced UMTS awards from BT Cellnet and One 2 One in the UK; Airtel and Xfera in Spain; T-Mobile in Germany; Omnitel in Italy; max.mobil in Austria; and AT&T Wireless in the United States. UMTS, also know as W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), is designed to provide high-speed access to information, e-mail, real-time video and other Wireless Internet services through a variety of personal, portable devices. Nortel Networks experience in CDMA will help to position UMTS operators to maximize their investment in W-CDMA access technology, improving coverage and maximizing capacity. Nortel Networks is the global CDMA market leader with a 47 percent share of the value of contracts announced over the 18-month period ended May 2001, according to Merrill Lynch. Nortel Networks solutions for building the high-performance Wireless Internet are driven by its 'Wings of Light' strategy, which combines optical, wireless and IP (Internet Protocol) to help operators provide reliable, high-speed access to broadband Internet services virtually 'anytime, anywhere.' Nortel Networks offers a complete end-to-end UMTS solution including Nortel Networks e-mobility Internet base transceiver stations for wide area radio coverage. Through its applications and devices portfolio, Nortel Networks has created and sold application enablers in key segments including business, consumer entertainment, mobile commerce and location-based services.
