Spain not to allow 3G network sharingdate: June 21, 2001 - source: Ana Birules, the Spanish minister of Science and Technology has said it is unlikely Spain will copy the cost-sharing plan for 3G UMTS licence holders approved in Germany, as Spanish companies are already allowed to rent infrastructure space from each others. Birules said they would consider the idea of allowing operators to share major parts of their new 3G mobile networks if necessary, but added Spanish operators do not face the same difficulties as caused by the auction in Germany. Spain had a 3G beauty contest rather than an auction, and the government collected E500m for four licences, as opposed to E50bn for six in Germany. The government tax aimed at recovering revenues lost in the beauty contest could be lowered next year, she said. Spain's 3G operators Telefonica Moviles, Amena, Airtel and Xfera have protested against the tax.
