Hutchison 3G plans great 3G packagesdate: June 22, 2001 Hutchison 3G plans to lure customers from its rivals by offering next generation 3G services for about the same price as the current mobile packages and confident it can make a profit on its 3G license. Hutchison 3G is one of five companies to win 3G mobile licences in the UK last year, intends to offer a "sparkling" bundle of music and sports content over its phones when it starts in the middle of next year, according to people familiar with its business plans. It is in talks to offer a mobile version of Quake, the hugely popular multiplayer Internet computer game, and plans to set up a national chain of branded shops to sell its services. But contrary to expectations, it does not plan to launch a version of Japanese partner NTT DoCoMo's successful i-mode mobile Internet service in the UK, nor use i-mode technology, the people said. DoCoMo, which holds a 20 percent stake in Hutchison 3G, will nevertheless play a key part in the launch. It will help Hutchison secure better supplies of scarce 3G handsets from Japanese manufacturers such as NEC and Matsushita Communication, the sources said. In a challenge to Vodafone's claims that data services will boost revenues per user, Hutchison is cautious about the prospect that customers will spend more on 3G compared to 2G. Falls in voice call prices will offset most, if not all, of the increases in data traffic, the sources said.
