Intel CEO denounce the future of 3Gdate: June 24, 2001 The president and CEO of Intel, Craig Barrettat, on Friday was doubtful on the future of 3G and claimed 2.5G were more likely to take off in the next few years than 3G. Barrett probed 3G is further in the future than most people believed and the next generation wireless business was over hyped by the handset makers and license holders. He said the cost of upgrading to 2.5G would be considerable less expensive than a giant leap to 3G and the technology is less challenging. Telecom experts said there are still many technical problems with the new technology especially time delay with cell-handoff on data transmission and voice call. Expects predicted a well-developed commercial 3G service would not be rollout until late 2002 at a cost of £3billion to each operators in the UK and online billing such as Internet browsing will generate a total revenue of only £300million by 2005 in the UK, which will not be enough to cover network cost.
