Illegal to built 3G network towers in Italydate: June 24, 2001 The government of Italy said on Saturday that it may be illegal for the operators to build 3G networks in Italy as it will breach the country's strict limit on electromagnetic radiation and a refund on all licences cost may be possible. The announcement means the operators will not be able to built 3G antennas, as building two antennaes within 15 to 40 miles of each others are enough to breach the electromagnetic emissions limit.
In October 2000, the government raised $10.18billion after awarding five 3G licenses and will be forced to repay back all licenses cost unless a solution is found, as operators cannot use the spectrums to its full capacities. Italy has the lowest legal limit allowed for electromagnetic levels in the EU and will cause a standstill to Italy's wireless operators, as the network cannot be upgraded beyond 2.5G. A scientist in Italy said electromagnetic pollution can cause medical problems such as cancers and lost of hairs to nearby residents.
