Open Loop and Index Co-developed a Content Protection Technology for FOMAdate: June 25, 2001 - source: Open Loop Open Loop Inc. a developer of information security technology, and Index Corporation, a leading information service venture for mobile phone, have jointly developed a content protection technology in the distribution of contents specifically geared for FOMA, third-generation (3G) mobile phones. In this joint effort, Open Loop and Index have developed a content protection technology for MPEG4-based video distribution service, adopted by "FOMA" IMT-2000 service by NTT DoCoMo. Open Loop provided a real-time encryption technology for MPEG4-based stream and a copyright protection technology for video materials when downloading contents, while Index was responsible for incorporating the technology into content distribution service, along with charging system. The two companies plan to develop and market content distribution system / service incorporating the jointly developed technology to be in time for this autumn when the full-fledged FOMA service is scheduled to start. In FOMA service, because the mobile phones are Java-enabled, the range of services content providers can offer is likely to expand, adding animations and/or sounds to the contents which previously have been mainly made of text and still pictures, providing games that users can enjoy even when they are out of the reach of electric waves, and so forth. In addition, making best use of its high-speed feature, FOMA service will enable the distribution of premium contents, such as MPEG4-based video and CD-level high-quality music. Open Loop and Index believe that they can make a contribution in ensuring the environment that allows content providers to distribute contents in a secured way, and the content distribution services for 3G mobile phone to make sound growth, by providing the content protection technology that protects contents against illegal copying, use, processing, and reuse. Furthermore, the content protection technology that this partnership has brought into the world is useful not only for mobile phones but also to general broadband contents designed, therefore, both companies consider to target other communications fields and broadcasting fields such as terrestrial digital broadcasting.
